Get to Know Your Bible
The Bible is truly an amazing book. Actually, it is a collection of 66 books – 39 in the Old Testament, and 27 in the New.
Bible Facts – Miscellaneous Facts:
- The bible contains 1189 chapters.
- The Old Testament has 929 chapters and the New Testaments has 260 chapters.
- The longest chapter in the bible is Psalm 119, and the shortest is Psalm 117.
- The longest verse is Esther 8:9, and the shortest is John 11:35.
The Bible was written:
- over a 1500 yeat span (from 1400 B.C. to A.D. 100 – over 40 generations.
- by more that 40 authors from many walks of life (i.e. – kings, peasants, philosophers, fishermen, poets, statemen, scholars).
- in different places (i.e. – wilderness, dungeons, palaces).
- in differences circumstances (i.e. – war, peace).
- in different moods (i.e. – heights of joy, dephts of despair), and
- in three different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek).
The Old Testament covers:
- the history of the creation of all things.
- the choice God made of a certain nation.
- the giving of a law to that nation through the great hero Moses, and
- the history of that chosen nation – how they sometimes obeyed the law and sometimes did not.
- But mostly the Old Testament foretells the coming of a Savior – Jesus.
- Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 are great examples of prophecies about the death of Jesus.
The New Testament relates:
- the story of Jesus, His life, His death, burial, and resurrection,
- and the story of the early years of the church Jesus established.
The Old Testament law was done away at the cross. Colossians 2:14 – “Blotting out the handwritting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.” The New Testament law is what we live under today. All men everywhere are responsible to obey the law of Christ set forth in the New Testament.
It is in the pages of this book that we find our hope of something wonderful beyond this life – heaven, and what we must do to be assured of going there.
