Just give me Jesus! Doesn’t that sound like a wonderful request? Isn’t it glorious when people turn from riches, from sin, from worldly attitudes and entanglements and decide they just want Jesus?
But what do people really mean when they say they just want Jesus? Of course we cannot judge people’s hearts, but from their actions we can easily see that this request—Just Give Me Jesus—is not always a wonderful thing:
- Some people want Jesus, but they don’t want to follow his word. It is impossible to have Jesus without being obedient to what he desires of us. John 15:7 — “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” John 12:48 — “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.” 2 John 9 — “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.”
- Some people want Jesus, but they don’t want his church. Some prefer a church established by men rather than the church built by Jesus. They prefer to worship according to the doctrines and innovations of men rather than in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Since Jesus built his church (Matthew 16:18), since he bought it with his own blood (Acts 20:28), since he made it his bride and body (Ephesians 5:22-32), isn—t it a slap in the face of our Savior to want him without his church?
Just give me Jesus should mean I want all of Jesus. I want his will to be my will. I want my life to be molded by him. I want to be part of his body.
